President Hosni Mubarak yesterday got a telephone call from Russian President Vladimir Putin. They dealt with the results of talks between Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon who is currently visiting Moscow.
Minster of Information Safwat A1 Sherif said talks dealt with risks of the deteriorating situation in the region and the importance of putting an end to it.
President underlined to the Russian President the need for intervention by international community to put an end to deteriorating situation in the occupied Palestinian territories and the importance of returning to negotiations table between the two parties.
The President also said that the two sides should agree on resuming negotiations immediately in the framework of international legitimacy.
The President moreover said resuming negotiations should be coupled with ending violence.
In Moscow Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov said President Putin has dispatched his special envoy to the Middle East region.
Ivanov said in a press conference that this step came after contacts by Putin with the leaders of the region mainly President Mubarak and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.
The Russian initiative comes after Israel reacted to mortar attacks by firing surface-to-surface missiles at the offices of the Palestinian security troops in Gaza.
