Mubarak, Assad underline intensifying efforts to salvage peace
Syria-Egypt, Politics, 9/3/2001

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad Monday underlined the importance of exerting all possible effort towards activating the international community's role and Arab efforts to salvage the Mideast peace process.

These remarks were made by Egyptian Minister of Information Safwat al-Sherif in the wake of the session of talks held by the two Arab leaders in Latakia today.

"The two leaders' summit took up the deteriorating situation in the Middle East and the serious Israeli acts of aggression on the Palestinian people," added Sherif.

Sherif pointed out that UN Security Council resolutions 242 and 338 along with the land for peace principle call upon Israel to withdraw from the occupied lands to the borders of June 4th 1967.

They also urge Israel to respect the legitimate rights of the Palestinians, he added.

On his part, Syrian Minister of Information Adnan Umran said that the summit meeting between the two leaders dwelt on means of restoring the Arab rights without budging one inch of Arab soil.
