European moves to contain developments in the region

In the context of his country's presidency to the European Union, the Belgian foreign minister Louis Michael held telephone calls with each of the US secretary of State Colin Powell and with the Russian foreign minister Igor Ivanov relating to conditions in the Middle East following the recent developments took place in the occupied Palestinian territories.

During these telephone calls, the Belgian foreign minister expressed the desire of the EU to work jointly with each of the USA and Russia to reach a means that will help to halt the deterioration of conditions in the Palestinian territories.

It is, however, expected that several European officials, during the coming phase will visit several middle east countries to hold talks with several officials in the region. A delegation representing the foreign relations committee at the European parliament will be the first to arrive in the Middle East in order to closely learn about latest developments in the region.
