Israel and Beit Jala

The Israeli prime minister has presided over a session of consultation with several ministers of his Cabinet on Wednesday evening. The meeting lasted until Thursday at dawn in order to evaluate current developments in the Palestinian territories, according to the Israeli radio.

The radio added that the foreign minister Shimon Peres, the defense minister Benjamin Bin Aleazer and the finance minister attended this session, besides heads of security departments in israel.

The radio said that the participants in the meeting agreed to keep the Israeli army in areas close to beit Jala and to re-enter it again if fire will be opened again at Geilo settlement from Beit Jala as well as to occupy vaster areas without consulting the mini Israeli cabinet.

The meeting also dealt with conditions in north Palestine ( Israel).

The radio continued that the Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon talked on the telephone with the US secretary of State Colin Powell and briefed him on the results of the said meeting and asked him to warn the chairman of the Palestinian Authority Yasser Arafat from re-opening fire at Geilo settlement.

The secretary of the Palestinian liaison office in Beit Jala stressed that the Israeli occupation army started on Thursday at dawn to pullout from certain positions it occupied since Monday evening in Beit Jala area, escorted by military helicopters.
