France and the Middle East
Regional-France, Politics, 8/31/2001
The French Foreign minister Hubert Vedrine has stressed that the situation in the Middle East raises fears and anger. In a statement to the French daily Le Figaro issued on Thursday, Vedrine described Israel's taking the whole Palestinian people as a hostage is shameful and regrettable.
He blamed the US for being negative over what is taking place in the Palestinian territories, adding " we expect more from her ( the US) regarding her responsibility and influence." Vedrine, simultaneously, commended the efforts made by the German foreign minister Yushka Fischer who recently visited the ME and noted that what Fischer has done is very good and makes Europe more steadfast towards the establishment of peace in the Middle East.
