Syrian military source: Syria is concerned with maintaining security on its territories
Syria-USA, Politics, 8/31/2001
The United Arab Emirates UAE al-Khaleij ( the Gulf) daily quoted a Syrian military source as saying that Syria is concerned with maintaining security and stability on its territories and will not permit this security to be violated, noting this very concern does not mean that Syria is responsible for any threats to the American interests in the world.
In a statement to the paper issued on Thursday, the Syrian source stressed that the recent American warnings for Syria is considered a chain in the series of the political escalation against the Arab states, noting that these warnings are the third of its kind in less than two months, as it was preceded by accusations addressed by the US defense department against Syria and Egypt of developing strategic weapons.
The source indicated that the diplomatic escalation campaign implies two indicators for the future of the Syrian- American relations in trying to undermine the balance in this relation, noting that the American side seeks to draw a strategy according to the conditions prevailing during the second Gulf war ( the Kuwaiti- Iraqi war).
The sources doubted the ability of international pressures on the region in turning time back to the point where the second Gulf war ended, adding that Syria's choosing peace as a strategic option does not mean it will be subjected to the estimates of foreign administrations because Damascus draws its policies according to the general principles it pursues and is not ready to be subjected to any diplomatic pressures damaging its interests.
For its part, a Palestinian source in Damascus considered in a statement to the paper that the American warning falls in the course of the state of concern over the increased Syrian- Palestinian contacts.
