Al-Fahoum and Arafat's visit to Damascus
Palestine-Syria, Politics, 8/27/2001
The chairman of the Palestinian National Salvation Front Khaled al-Fahoum has stated that the delay of the chairman of the Palestinian Authority Yasser Arafat's visit to Damascus is because of many reasons, especially the need of the arrival of a Palestinian delegation to meet on political points to be discussed during the visit as well as the coordination before the convening of the Durban conference which will be attended by both Arafat and the Syrian foreign minister Farouk al-Shara.
In a statement to the BBC on Sunday, al-Fahoum said that Arafat's visit to Damascus will be after Durban's conference and this visit will not be postponed.
Replying to a question, al-Fahoum explained that Arafat's visit is in need of arrangements and it is necessary because there is an earlier difference between the PLO ( Palestine Liberation Organization) and Syria and in order to correct these differences there should be an agreement of the main political points.
On what has been leaked on Syrian conditions, al-Fahoum stressed there was no Syrian condition on the Palestinian side and that the Palestinian delegation which currently visits Damascus met with al-Shara and its was agreed on the main issues for this visit. Al-Fahoum stressed that the Syrian- Palestinian closeness is a sort of pressure on Israel, in regard to negotiations and this is in support of the PLO.
