This year's flood above average

Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Mahmoud Abu Zeid said the flood this year is above average (84 billion cubic metres).
"Actual steps of cooperation have already begun among the eastern Nile Basin (Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia) to set up a regional unit based in Addis Ababa for supervision, follow-up and technical studies for joint ventures," he said.
Abu Zeid said that there are no dangers posed by the floods against the High Dam, adding that the Toshka spillway is capable for absorbing 125 billion cubic metres of the flood waters, in addition to Lake Nasser, whose capacity hits about 164 billion cubic metres.
On the other hand, The Nile water level in Lake Nasser rose to 177.98 metres Thursday, recording 8 cm more than the level registered on Wednesday.
"Water stored behind the High Dam reached 137,388 billion cubic meters," according to an official source at the High Dam and Aswan Reservoir General Authority.
"Some 255 million cubic meters were released into the Nile course, north of the High Dam to meet the needs of drinking water, electricity generation, irrigation, navigation and industry," the source added.
Meanwhile, the World Water Council (WWC) executive board under Egypt entrusted the committee formed under Abu Zeid to follow up procedures to grant the first prize in the water excellence field ($ 150,000).
The prize will be given to a person or an institution that plays a role in overcoming water problems and developing water resources.
