Syrian firm position towards ME peace reiterated
Syria-Palestine, Politics, 8/25/2001
A well-informed Syrian source told the London- based al-Sharq al-Awsat daily in its Friday's issue that the position of Syria towards the Palestinian question and the peace process is unwavering and will not be changing, noting that the Syrian conditions are totally in compliance with the rights of the Palestinian people and their militant positions.
On what has been announced by the secretary of the executive committee of the PLO Mahmoud Abbas ( Abu Mazen) on the intention of the international cooperation official at the Palestinian Authority Nabil Shaath to visit Syria to draw the wide lines for new relations with her ( Syria) and to prepare for the visit of Yasser Arafat to Damascus, the Syrian source explained that Damascus' set conditions for Arafat's visit have not been changed. They are the same conditions expressed by President Bashar al-Assad at the Amman's summit in March this year.
The Syrian source considered that if Abu Mazen had intended from his recent visit to Damascus to get a Syrian understanding for Oslo, Syria understands that Oslo has finished, noting one who thinks that Syria surpassed what had been expressed of her vision towards the Palestinian question and the Arab- Israeli conflict and the peace process, will be mistaken.
