20,000 Muslims protest against US stance
Regional, Religion, 8/24/2001

Despite heavy rains, about 20,000 Muslims staged a demonstration in Cape Town, South Africa, in protest against the US and Israel's stances towards UN Conference on anti-racism due to be held in Durban in the coming ten days.

During the march, organized by the Islamic Judiciary Council, the demonstrators hoisted banners reading "Zionism is a racist movement" and Israel is a racist State," and "Go to Hell, America."

It is noteworthy that the US opposes strongly the demands of Arab countries to consider Zionism as racism. It also rejects the African states demands to attain compensations for the centuries of slavery and colonialism to the extent that it threatens to boycott the conference if those demands are introduced into the agenda of conference.
