Nile flood poses no danger
Egypt, Local, 8/24/2001
"Nile flood poses no danger, as it is under control," said Egyptian Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources Mahmoud Abu Zeid.
The minister, after inaugurating the first phase of Menoufi Canal lock and laying the foundation stone of Mubarak Garden in the Barrage, Abu Zeid said that the conditions in Sudan are not dangerous, Nile flood in the Sudan started to decline at an average of 30 cm per day.
"There is constant coordination between irrigation officials in Egypt and Sudan to handle any contingency," he added.
Abu Zeid noted that all indications proved that this year's flood was above average but a final appraisal would be made in early October.
"More water will be allowed out of the High Dam in order to improve quality of the Nile water and make the best use of each and every drop of water," said Abu Zeid.
Asked about the Toshka spillway in southern Egypt, Abu Zeid said that it could be opened when needed.
Reports show a continuous increase in the water level in the Nasser Lake with water level registering an 11cm rise on Wednesday.
