Maghreban shoura council's political affairs committee winds up works
Maghreb, Politics, 8/24/2001

The political affairs committee of the Maghreban shoura council (legislative body of the Arab Maghreb Union) wound up on Thursday its meeting in Rabat with the adoption of a political declaration to be submitted to the Shoura council meeting slated for next September 5-6 in Rabat.

The committee's meeting focused on the Arab Maghreb Union political action and insisted that the UMA construction process is an irreversible strategic choice. Participants also urged for re-activating the Arab Maghreb joint action, stressing that democratic action is the best system to manage Maghreban affairs.

The committee, which called for the lifting of the anti-Iraq embargo and the sanctions enforced against Libya, also renewed support to the Palestinian people struggle for its rights.

On the agenda were also issues related to the Euro-Mediterranean partnership, cooperation with the European Union and Arab-African solidarity.

The Maghreban shoura council is made of five committees, political affairs, economic affairs, financial affairs, planning and food security, human resources and infrastructures.

In Tunis, the legal affairs committee also opened on Wednesday a session.

Two other committees of the Shoura council were convened recently, the basic infrastructure committee, which met on Monday in Tripoli, and the human resources committee which met last week in Algiers.
