Regional, Politics, 8/24/2001
The secretary general of the Arab League (AL) Amr Moussa appointed the former Jordanian prime minister Taher al-Masri as a commissioner general for the civil society affairs at the AL.
In press statements he made after meeting with Moussa on Wednesday in Cairo, al-Masri confirmed his consent to acquire this post at a time to be set by Moussa later.
Mousa said he had discussed with the AL secretary general his plan to develop and reform the AL, stressing readiness to work for revitalizing the Arab system.
News reports said that al-Masri's tasks will be confined in maintaining co-ordination among Arab non- governmental organizations within the confines of interests of the Arab league in non- governmental organizations.
The source added that the post of " the general commissioner for the civil society affairs " did not exist before, rather was established in the course of re-structuring of the AL by Moussa.
In July Moussa appointed member of the Palestinian parliament Hanan Ashrawi as the press controller at the Arab League.
