Morocco's FM: Arab Foreign Council Meeting Positive
Morocco-Regional, Politics, 8/23/2001

Moroccan minister of foreign affairs and cooperation, Mohamed Benaissa, said the extraordinary session of the Arab League foreign ministers council held in Cairo on Wednesday was successful as it took a series of measures to consolidate the Palestinian position.

The session, held at the request of Palestine, examined the situation in the Palestinian territories, following the recent Israeli military escalation.

Benaissa told reporters before leaving Cairo the session, held with the participation of Palestinian president, Yasser Arafat, was marked by a constructive debate on various aspects and developments of the Palestinian cause, in the light of increased Israeli aggressions against the Palestinian people.

Everybody agreed that it is important and crucial to coordinate and intensify Arab efforts, in the frame of a diplomatic initiative seeking to immediately end all forms of violence in the Palestinian territories, and put an end to Israel's occupation and violation of Palestinian and Arab institutions in Al-Quds. There was also unanimity over the need to promote the return to the negotiation table so as to resume the peace process on the basis of the same principles that were behind its launching and commitments made by the two sides.

In view of the present deadlock, we ought to handle reality with a new approach and a new vision, he went on stressing that Arab common action should take into account new regional and international developments.

He also stressed that countries enjoying an influence and having interests in the region should be made aware of the peace collapsing hazards.

He renewed the readiness of Morocco, under the leadership of King Mohammed VI who chairs the Al-Quds committee, to contribute to any initiative meant to reach a comprehensive and lasting peace based on justice in the middle east.
