Syrian- Turkish water talks
Syria-Turkey, Politics, 8/23/2001
The minister of irrigation Taha al-Atrash has called for the revival and reactivation of the joint technical committee which was formed in 1980 to discuss the way of sharing or dividing waters between the three countries of Syria, Iraq and Turkey, noting that Iraq had extended a similar invitation to Turkey with the aim to reach an ultimate agreement to this end.
In separate meetings he held on Wednesday with each of the Turkish minister of energy and natural resources and the minister of state responsible for foreign trade Tonga Touskai, the Syrian minister explained that the protocol signed between Syria and Turkey in 1987 which stressed the need of signing a water agreement between the two countries avails the possibility of studying joint projects on the Tigris and the Euphrates as the aim of these relations is to expand ties between the two countries, Iraq, Syria and Turkey.
The Turkish minister Touskai has announced that Turkey is with making use of the waters and distributing them evenly for the interests of the three countries in an atmosphere of confidence and reciprocated dialogue.
