Syria-Turkey, Politics, 8/23/2001
The Turkish daily Joumhoreyat said on Wednesday that Turkey has tried during the few past months to provide Syria with 650 cubic meters of waters per second in compensation to the amounts of water which it ( Turkey) was obliged to reduce to less that 500 cubic meters per second in the year 2000 and the beginning of 2001.
The paper added that the Turkish side is persistent that the Syrian dams network are not enough and that the waters are not made use of in the best way and they go to the sea.
The paper indicated that during the visit of the Syrian minister of irrigation Taha al-Atrash to Turkey, the question on the negative aspects that face the irrigation of " Ameek" plain which is irrigated by the waters of the " Orontes " river which Syria monitors will be discussed.
