Syria and the Palestinian authority
Palestine-Syria, Politics, 8/23/2001

The Israeli daily Haartez said on Wednesday that a Palestinian delegation led by the regional cooperation official in the Palestinian authority Nabil Shaath will head for Damascus this week in order to discuss areas of cooperation between Syria and the Palestinian Authority.

The said paper quoted member of the central committee of the Fatah movement Mahmoud Abbas, who was in Damascus two weeks ago, as saying on Tuesday that the Palestinian delegation will discuss the general lines of bilateral relations between Syria and the Palestinian Authority.

Abbas added that the Syrian officials told him that Damascus is ready to establish any kind of relations and that there is not need to have a full consent regarding all matters.

Meantime, Palestinian sources in Amman told the Jordanian daily al-Dostour issued on Wednesday that a Palestinian delegation led by Shaath will head today ( Thursday ) for Damascus in a visit to Syria during which he will be meeting with high ranking Syrian officials and discuss with them arrangements to convene a Syrian- Palestinian summit as well as bilateral relations and conditions on the Palestinian arena.

The sources added that this visit is a completion to the visit held recently by Mahmoud Abbas ( Abu Mazen) in Damascus. A visit which was described as successful and paved the way for Arafat's visit to Damascus.

These sources explained that the Syrian and Palestinian sides are careful to have good preparations for the Syrian- Palestinian summit so as to have a summit which would conclude positive results that come up to the level of challenges facing the Arab nation.

The same sources expressed hope that Shaath's visit will result in defining a set date for the Syrian- Palestinian summit, shortly, in Damascus.
