Egypt condemns Israeli practices in occupied territories
Egypt-Palestine, Politics, 8/22/2001
Egypt has asserted that Israeli occupation practices in the occupied Palestinian territories including Jerusalem represent a flagrant violation of international legitimacy resolutions, and the fourth Geneva Convention on protecting the rights of civilians under occupation.
Egypt also asserted that it was not logic that the United Nations, especially the Security Council, gives a blind eye to those practices at the time when calls for observing human rights are made here and there.
Egypt reiterated that the international community is deeply concerned over the serious ongoing developments in the occupied territories, especially Jerusalem.
In a statement before the UN Security Council session on conditions in the occupied territories Monday night.
Egypt asserted that peace at this stage is facing a true dilemma as the Palestinian people have been suffering since last September under the Israeli brutal and violent practices, which have taken the lives of hundred of victims and led to the injury of thousand others in addition to the damage of houses and other property.
The statement, read out by Egypt's delegate to the UN ambassador Reda Bai' bars, said such Israeli practices are a flagrant violation of international legitimacy resolutions represented in the United Nations and the fourth Geneva CConvention on protection of civilians under occupation.
Security is a legitimate demand by all peoples of the region and no one can deny this right, the statement added.
Egypt has repeatedly called on the international community to swiftly take steps towards forcing the parties concerned to resume the peace process on sound bases and not to concentrate on security sides only without getting into the core and crux of the problem, namely peace that is based on justice, equality and full respect of the legitimate rights of the Palestinians, the statement added.
"Egypt has reiterated the need to dispatch observers to the Palestinian territories to contribute to calming down the situation within the framework of implementing the Mitchell Commission recommendations in order to reach the final- status negotiations," the statement said.
Egypt still has hope that a just and comprehensive settlement could be reached to end the Arab-Israeli conflict despite the recent Israeli acts, the statement pointed out.
