Al-Shara gets telephone calls from Maher, Hammoud, al-Khatib, Arab foreign ministers meet today
Syria-Regional, Politics, 8/22/2001

The Syrian foreign minister Farouk al-Shara on Tuesday received a telephone call from the Egyptian foreign minister Ahmad Maher during which talks dealt with the emergency meeting of the Arab foreign ministers due to be held today in Cairo in order to crystallize a united Arab position towards the aggressive acts carried out by Israel against the Palestinian people in the occupied Arab territories.

Maher said he will hold consultations with al-Shara and with the foreign ministers of Lebanon, Jordan and Tunisia and with the secretary general of the Arab League, all before convening the meeting.

A telephone call was also made on Tuesday between al-Shara and his Lebanese counterpart Mahmoud Hammoud during which the two ministers exchanged coordination and consultation views concerning the meeting of the Arab foreign ministers.

A similar telephone call was also held on Tuesday between al-Shara and his Jordanian counterpart Abdul Illah al-Khatib, during which the meeting's agenda was discussed.

The Lebanese foreign minister Mahmoud Hamoud said that the Arab foreign ministers will discuss the Israeli occupation of Beit al-Sharq ( Orient House) and of several Palestinian establishments, means of defending Palestinian and Arab rights and practical measures to support the Palestinians in confrontation of the Israeli arrogance and Israel's rejection o implement UN resolutions and its violation of international legitimacy.

In a pre-departure statement at Beirut's airport upon leaving for Cairo on Tuesday, the Lebanese minister underlined the importance of this meeting amid the critical conditions in the region, especially in the Palestinian territories. He indicated Lebanon's clear stand to this effect in that Lebanon will ask for Arab support according to the Arab summit resolutions especially those of the recent Amman's summit in which the Arab states voiced support to Lebanon in its demand to liberate its lands and for rehabilitation of the already liberated Lebanese area and bring back them to the Lebanese economic cycle after both south Lebanon and the western Bekaa suffered occupation for 22 years of occupation and the destruction inflicted on them.

In an arrival statement at Cairo's airport, the Lebanese minister stressed the need of taking a united Arab stand in confrontation of the escalated Israeli aggressions against the Palestinian people. He expressed his hope that results of the meeting of the Arab foreign ministers will be reflected in further Arab solidarity in defense of the Arab rights in general and the Palestinian rights in particular.
