Maher meets with Sudanese foreign minister
Egypt-Sudan, Politics, 8/21/2001

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmad Maher met on Monday with Sudanese Foreign Minister Moustafa Othman Ismail, currently visiting Cairo.

Emerging from the meeting, Maher said that the visit to Egypt by the Sudanese Foreign Minister was a chance to discuss in detail relations between the two countries and coordination in light of the decision made by President Hosni Mubarak and Sudanese President Omar Al Bashir to form the Egyptian-Sudanese follow-up committee.

Maher stressed the importance of taking measures to push forward the Egyptian-Libyan initiative on realizing peace in Sudan.

"The meeting took up coordinating stances during the Anti-racism Conference which will be held late this month in the South African city of Durban and floods which hit Sudan recently," said Maher.

The Foreign Minister expressed Egypt's support to Sudan in face of the torrential rains.

On his part, the Sudanese Foreign Minister said that his meeting with Maher dealt with bilateral relations in light of the meeting which was held in Khartoum last July between Egyptian Prime Minister Atef Ebeid and the Sudanese Vice-President.

He said that Maher's visit to Khartoum, which is expected to take place in October, would offer a chance for more consultations.

He added that the two sides will discuss the coming steps to be adopted by Egypt and Libya for realizing peace in the region.

On Tripoli meeting on the Sudanese issue which will be held on the sidelines of Al-Fateh (September 1st) celebrations, the Sudanese Minister said that his country will take part in the meeting.

He expressed his country's support to reach a permanent cease-fire in the Sudan as of Tuesday.
