Algerian president underscores common resistance to colonizers, in message to king
Algeria-Morocco, Politics, 8/21/2001

Algerian president, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, underscored, in a message of congratulations to King Mohammed VI on the 48th anniversary of the Revolution of the King and the People the Algerian and Moroccan peoples' joint struggle for liberation.

Bouteflika stressed that the Revolution of the King and the People is also marked in Algeria where people stood up in support of the Moroccan people following the exile of the late Kings Mohammed V and Hassan II, then crown prince, far from their country. The common commemoration by the two brotherly peoples is the fruit of the close links of solidarity and symbiosis which marked relations throughout the shared history and common struggle waged together for freedom, the Algerian president wrote.

The message also stresses that the August 20 anniversary celebrated by Morocco and Algeria is a historic date after the colonizers decided to exile the guide of the liberation march, King Mohammed V, and his loyal son, the late King Hassan II, the initiator of the march of construction. The Algerian head of state stated further that the hearts of both people beat at unison to mark the resistance of men who stood up in Algeria and Morocco to face the enemy, sparing no sacrifice to defend the dignity of all the Maghreban countries.

The day when the sovereign, HM King Mohammed V and his successor, HM king Hassan II, were taken out of their home and out of their homeland saw the convergence of wills to definitively reject division, consolidate coherence between the two brotherly people and consolidate their resolve to liberate Morocco and Algeria, the message reads.

The 20 August anniversary draws its moral and historical value from the epic that united Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria in the same revolution against the occupier and from the great sacrifices made by men whom the exile of the late king Mohammed VI have made more resolved and more united in the joint struggle until victory.

President Bouteflika also stressed that out of the duty of faithfulness, present and coming generations should not forget the epics of the hero king, H.M. Mohammed V. The Moroccan people, and all Magheban, Arab, African and Islamic peoples should be proud of these epics and of the sovereign's lofty values and sacrifices to defend the nation, the religion and the language. Present and coming generations should also keep in mind the hopes pinned by the fighter king and all of his brothers -the valiant Moroccan and Algerian fighters, to endeavor together, after victory over the enemy, to achieve unity, face under-development and build up a united nation.

The best way to celebrate this anniversary is to persevere on the path traced by the late sovereign who was an example of Maghreban patriotism, by endeavoring to serve the two countries, in particular and the whole of the Great Arab Maghreb countries in general, in order to step up the feelings of solidarity, affection and sympathy that cannot be altered by divergences.

The Algerian president also extends the king wishes of good health, happiness and success and prays the Almighty to help the sovereign work for the progress of the Moroccan people and for the consolidation of brotherhood, neighborliness and complementarity between the two countries to enable them contribute to the consolidation of the Maghreban union.
