Morocco urges United Nations to shoulder responsibility toward Palestinian people
Morocco-Palestine, Politics, 8/21/2001
Morocco urged the United Nations Organization to shoulder its responsibility and take measures needed to guarantee the implementation of the Mitchell report and ensure that Israel respects the humanitarian international conventions, mainly the fourth Geneva Convention.
Moroccan Assistant-delegate to the UN, Mohamed Loulichki, told the UN security council's emergency meeting-- held at the request of Islamic countries-- the world body should act to secure international protection to the Palestinian people, arguing that things would not have gotten that worse had the security council approved last March the dispatching of international observers to determine responsibilities and prevent violence.
After he recalled the great hopes for a fair peace in the middle east prompted by negotiations, he deplored the spiral of violence in which the region plunged as a result of the escalation policy practiced by Israeli forces which kill children and civilians, hamper the free movement, impose economic blockade on Palestinian territories, destroy houses and carry on the establishment of settlements.
He also imputed to the international community's hesitation the continuation of the repression policy carried out by Israeli soldiers who have waged a premeditated murder campaign against Palestinian figures and are threatening of death fathers and relatives of persons suspected of taking part in the anti-occupation resistance.
The diplomat also recalled the occupation by Israel of the Orient House in Al-Quds (Jerusalem) and the condemnation of this act by the Al-Quds committee, chaired by King Mohammed VI. The committee also called the peace process sponsors and the United Nations to end the violations of holy Muslim sites in the holy city, he recalled.
After he urged the UN security council to shoulder its responsibility under the UNO charter, the Moroccan representative argued that security and peace in the Middle east depend on the implementation of resolutions 242 and 338, adopted by the security council, on the basis of the land-for-peace principle, restoring to the Palestinian people its rights, on top of them its legitimate right to establish an independent state with Al-Quds as its capital and the withdrawal of Israel from other Arab territories it is occupying, including the Syrian Golan heights and the rest of Lebanese territories it is still occupying.
