Southern city of Dakhla gets new port
Morocco, Economics, 8/21/2001

Morocco's prime minister, Abderrahmane Youssoufi, dedicated on Monday a new port in the southern coastal city of Dakhla.

The port comprises 600 m of quays for high-sea fishing activities, 300 m for activities of coastal shipping and exportation of fishing products. It is equipped with maintenance machinery for loading and unloading operations, mainly a crane, with a capacity of 35 tons for containers, four 6-ton cranes for unloading and loading high sea fishing products and other machinery.

The port also comprises a 270-ha industrial compound area, of which a 60 ha area is ready for use by private entrepreneurs.

A 4 km-long road is linking the city to the port.

The port's first part cost 475 million DH (US$ 43 million), including 350 million DH which went to construction works, 50 million Dh for the industrial compound and 75 million Dh for equipment.
