On the Syrian- Iraqi relations
Syria-Iraq, Politics, 8/20/2001

In an analysis on Syrian- Iraqi relations since Syria's independence in 1946 the Kuwaiti daily al-Seyasah said on Sunday that Baghdad did not hide its ambitions towards " this lost Paradise," which is called al-Shaam, besides the same attitude was not also hidden by Egypt which was seeking her own vital environment, and therefore the Syrians found themselves between Baghdad on the one hand and the Saudi- Egyptian axis on the other.

The Kuwaiti paper added that the Syrians have a pan Arab sense of nationalism that constituted in them the complex of national commitment towards the Arab nation, and unity between Egypt and Syria was the result.

The paper continued that the emergence of the Baath party in Syria and the expansion in the circle of its influence has created a new conflict between the Syrians and the Iraqis that reached its peak in 1966 when the Iraqis gave shelter to the Syrians, representing the party leaderships, who were expelled from Syria in a movement aimed at showing their remarkable position in the Baath Party.

The paper explained that the Iraqis who were weakened by their war with Kuwait, felt for the first time their needs to Syria and saw in Damascus an outlet towards an Arab legitimacy it has lost after its occupation of Kuwait.

The paper indicated that the Syrian ambitions towards approaching Iraq are completely different from the Iraqi ambitions, being merely economic. Syria owns the great potential in the conversion industries especially medicines.
