Consultations by Arab foreign ministers
Regional, Politics, 8/20/2001

Arab League Secretary-General Amr moussa arrived in Sanaa late Sunday on a two-day visit to Yemen for talks with Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh, Foreign Minister Abu Bakr Abdullah Al-Korbi and a number of other senior officials.

On arrival, Moussa said his visit comes amid deteriorating developments in the occupied Palestinian territories, in light of Israeli practices which have been finding a world support.

Moussa said he will update President Saleh and senior Yemeni officials on a number of issues pertaining to the system in the pan-Arab organization and means to render joint Arab action more effective.

Moussa said his visit to Yemen falls within the framework of an Arab tour aimed at holding consultations with the Arab states on efforts exerted to promote and reform the Arab League.

In statements prior to his departure from Cairo, Moussa said his agenda includes the latest developments in the region in the light of the ongoing consultations for holding an emergency Arab Foreign Ministers meeting and other Arab and international issues.

Asked on the agenda of the foreign ministers meeting, due to be held on Wednesday, Moussa said consultations are still under way between the league and the foreign ministers in this respect.

The emergency meeting does not contradict with the ordinary meeting of the Arab Foreign Ministers Council, due to be held on September 9.

Replying to a query on the message Iraq sent to the Arab meetings calling for the league's intervention in the issues of Iraqi and Kuwaiti missing-in-action, Moussa said the league received a message from Iraqi Foreign Minister Nagui Sabri which has been considered an official document at Iraq's request and the member states were informed.

Asked on what the league could do in this regard and in light of Kuwaiti's wish to tackle the issue of POWs within the framework of the UN Security Council, Moussa said consultations in this regard will be held with the Arab nations in order to find the nature of moves to be taken.

On the implementation of the agreements reached during the emergency meeting of the Arab Information Ministers, Moussa said he is following up the steps through continued contacts with Lebanese Information Minister Ghazi Al-Aridi, current Arab Information Ministers Council Chairman, and a number of other Arab information ministers.
