Draft resolution urges immediate end to violence in ME

A draft resolution by the UN Security Council late Friday called for the immediate cessation of all acts of violence, provocation and destruction, as well as the return to the positions and arrangements which existed prior to September 2000.

It called on the two sides to start the comprehensive implementation of the recommendations made in the report of Sharm-Sheikh fact-finding committee (Mitchell report) in a speedy manner.

It also called for the establishment of a monitoring mechanism to help the parties implement Mitchell's peace plan and help create a better situation on the ground.

The draft requested Israel, the occupying power, to reverse all actions taken recently against the Orient House and other Palestinian institutions in and around occupied East Jerusalem.

It appealed to the international donor community to extend, as rapidly and as generously as possible, economic and financial assistance to help the Palestinian people, and stressed in this regard, the importance of adhoc liaison committee.

It called for the resumption of negotiations between the two sides with the middle east peace process on its agreed basis, taking into consideration developments in previous discussions between the two sides, and urges them to reach a final agreement on all issues.

It requested the Secretary-General to consult the parties on early steps of implementation of the present resolution and to report and/or brief the council on a regular basis, and for the first time within one month from the date of adoption of this resolution.
