Regional-Palestine, Politics, 8/18/2001
All Arab states agreed to attend the emergency meeting of the Arab Foreign Ministers in Cairo Wednesday.
The meeting will be held at the request of Palestine, according to an official source at the Arab League Secretariat.
The meeting will probe the latest developments in the Palestinian territories which will be held at the Arab League headquarters, the Israeli policy of assassination and the seizure of Palestinian facilities in east Jerusalem with the aim of crystallizing a unified Arab stance regarding such Israeli practices.
Secretary-General Amr Moussa received on Thursday David Satterfield, US Assistant Secretary of State for Middle East Affairs, currently visiting Cairo.
Moussa stressed the importance of the US role in dealing with the Israeli policy, which could drive the region to the brink of an abyss.
Moussa told the US official that the continuation of suffering of the Palestinian people without the effective US intervention would affect Washington's image in Arab countries.
On his part, Satterfield described his meeting with Moussa as good and constructive, expressing hope for boosting relations between the United States and the Arab League in the coming stage.
Moussa received on Thursday European Union's peace envoy Miguel Moratinos who arrive in Cairo on Wednesday.
Moratinos will discuss the worsening situation in the Middle East in light of the Israeli terrorist escalations.
Following the meeting Moratinos said Moussa posted him on the steps recently taken by AL to contain the situation in addition to the latest Arab four-way meeting hosted by Cairo on Wednesday.
"The European effective role is demonstrated in supporting Palestinians with political, economic and security assistance," said Moratinos.
He denied Europe's silence vis-a-vis the Israeli aggressions, adding that Europe is continuing contacts in coordination with the US and the Arab World.
He said that the G-8 Summit in Genoa advocated dispatch of international observers to the occupied Palestinian territories.
