AI calls on Britain to stop weapons to Israel
Palestine-UK, Politics, 8/18/2001
The Amnesty International said on Thursday that Britain should stop exporting weapons to Israel as the organization can't accept the Israeli assurances that it doesn't use these weapons against Palestinians in West Bank and Gaza strip.
Meanwhile, Director of International amnesty in Britain K. Allen said that Israel purchased British parts of helicopter gunships, tanks, and fighters in addition to small arms ammunition.
On the other hand, for the first time, the Amnesty International appointed a Muslim as Secretary General of the Organization to succeed Pierre Sane, who led the top rights watchdog for ten years.
Irene Khan, 44, is the first woman and Asian ever to be named for the job.
The new chief worked for 21 years as assistant UN Commissioner for human rights.
