Treatise on Islamic law to be released Sunday in India
Regional, Religion, 8/18/2001

The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) will bring out this week, a treatise on Islamic law which would work as the source book for practitioners of modern law, judges, scholars and students, reported the Indian news agency PTI.

Making the announcement here Friday, AIMPLB said the 'Compendium of Islamic Laws' offers a section-wise compilation of the rules of Shariah relating to the areas governed in India for Muslims by the Muslim Personal Law.

The compendium, to be released in New Delhi on Sunday, covers the entire gamut of Muslim personal law, including marriage, divorce, guardianship, custody of children, maintenance, gifts, wills, inheritance and waqfs, AIMPLB office secretary Mohammad Fahim Akhtar said in a press release.

It quoted AIMPLB chief Qazi Mujahidul Islam Qasmi, under whose supervision it was finalized, as saying that "In the absence of a compendium of Islamic laws, courts had to depend on secondary sources like translations, textbooks and judicial precedents of the past."

Originally prepared in Urdu by Ulema under the auspices of AIMPLB, the 390-page treatise is based on "the most authentic principles of the Hanafi school of Islamic laws," the release said.
