Demonstrations in Copenhagen against the Israeli ambassador, calls to try him over crimes against the Palestinians
Israel-Denmark, Politics, 8/16/2001

In massive demonstration in the Danish capital in protest of the policy of torture and assassination against the Palestinians, the new Israeli ambassador in Denmark Karmi Jeilo arrived in Copenhagen on Wednesday escorted by large number of police men as a result of the vast campaign of denunciation by the Danish people because of his criminal past when he was a chairman for the Israeli " Shein Beit" on 1995- 1996.

News reports said that after Jeiloun's arrival in Copenhagen's airport he was taken to a car that reached him to the Israeli embassy in the southern suburb of the capital where he was met by the demonstrations.

The Danish security forces besieged the street in which the Israeli embassy is situated by 60 member provided with riot- fighting equipment and police- dogs.

Well-informed sources said that the Israeli embassy resorted to services of a private security company to guard Jeilon all the time.

A spokesman for the Copenhagen police said that the police approved three demonstrations held separately in front of the embassy in protest of Jeiloun's arrival.

Several local and international human rights organizations asked the Danish government to refuse the credentials of this Israeli ambassador but their efforts were futile.

The " Unity List" party announced it will file a case against the ambassador under the charges of violating the UN treaty concerning torture. The spokesman for the party Surin Sundir Guard said that " Jeiloun himself admitted he gave orders to torture 100 Palestinians and he has to be judicially pursued." The Danish foreign minister, on the other hand, on Wednesday renewed his country's position which rejects torture.
