On Syrian Kuwaiti, Iraqi relations
Syria-Kuwait, Politics, 8/16/2001

The Kuwaiti embassy in Damascus said in an exclusive statement to the Jordanian paper al-Dostour denied on Wednesday that the timing in which works of the Syrian- Kuwaiti committee in Damascus just one day after the end of similar works for the Syrian- Iraqi committee to have any links to Syrian mediation efforts between Kuwait and Iraq, noting that the timing of holding the meeting had been decided since a long time ago.

The embassy's sources said that these are merely economic meetings relating to the development of cooperation between the two countries in all fields.

These sources also denied that the Kuwaiti government had asked Syria to start repaying its due debts estimated at USD one billion, noting that there are agreement to pay the debts in a way that these debts will be refunded ten years after the date of offering the loan.

The paper said that Arab diplomatic sources told it that Kuwait might ask Damascus to pay its debt as a sort of pressure on Syria because of its increasing rapprochement with Baghdad.

Sources at the Kuwaiti embassy expressed regret over these rumors, noting that this is just a Syrian matter " and we do not interfere in the special affairs of any Arab state, noting that many Gulf states had resumed their relations with Baghdad and despite that Kuwait did not stand against that.
