US ambassador: Washington supports ongoing reforms in Morocco
Morocco-USA, Politics, 8/16/2001
The administration of US president George W. Bush supports and hails ongoing reforms in Morocco under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, said in Rabat Wednesday US ambassador, Margaret Tutwiler.
The US diplomat who was meeting speaker of the house of representatives, Abdelouahed Radi, said she will be endeavoring during her tenure to consolidate relations between Morocco and the USA. She also underscored the role played by the Moroccan legislative branch in attracting more investments to Morocco, especially American ones.
Radi, for his part, recalled the centuries-old excellent relationships between Morocco and the USA, noting that these ties are not only based on shared interests but also on shared values, mainly the defense of peace and security, the respect of human rights, law supremacy and the peaceful settlement of conflicts and disputes.
After he surveyed the cooperation ties between the Moroccan house of representatives and the US congress, he said these relations ought to be consolidated, extended and diversified.
He also surveyed before the US diplomat ongoing political and institutional reforms in Morocco, and problems facing the kingdom, which needs, he said, more high-tech and investments for its economic development.
The Sahara issue was also brought up by Radi who hailed the part played by former US secretary of state James Baker, in his capacity as UN secretary general's special envoy for the Sahara, in settling the issue.
Tutwiler started this month her position as US extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador in Morocco.
