Israeli aggressions jeopardize US interests in Mideast

Egyptian Presidential Political Adviser Osama Al Baz said Washington fully recognizes that a continued deterioration in the Middle East would not only harm the interests of US allies, but also those of the US itself.

In the long run, such a situation would undermine the Israeli interests, Baz said.

Baz said Israel's incessant aggressions on the Palestinians could squander any chance for a settlement of the Middle East crisis.

Baz made it clear that the Israeli attacks would further inflame the situation in the region.

It is hard to predict now the development of actions in the upcoming stage, said Baz, adding that there are some indications showing that the US would play a more effective role in the Middle East peace process.

"We are not asking Washington to do something beyond its capacity, but rather we are asking it to take a decisive stance, especially with regard to the implementation of US-sponsored agreements," Baz said.

Baz said Arab countries could not stand helpless regarding events in the occupied lands. He said Egypt welcomes the convening of any Arab summit at any time provided that it should determine beforehand the targets it would like to achieve.

He said Sharon and his government are behaving as if they are launching undeclared war.

He said Egypt has no plans to close down its embassy in Tel Aviv unless it found that this would serve the interests of Arabs.

He considered that cutting off contacts between Egypt and Israel would be a wrong decision.
