Egypt and S. Korea signed cooperation agreement for peaceful uses of nuclear power
Egypt-South Korea, Politics, 8/15/2001
Egypt and S. Korea signed cooperation agreement for peaceful uses of nuclear power. The measures came at the closing session of talks held between Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher and his S. Korean counterpart, Han Seung-Soo, who is now visiting Cairo.
At the joint press conference held after the signing ceremony, Maher said that the joint meetings took up means of promoting bilateral cooperation, along with the international situation, with emphasis being laid on the Middle East.
The two countries' views regarding these issues were identical, he pointed out.
The Korean minister, on his part, said his country is interested in what is going on in the Palestinian lands and is condemning all forms of violence that are threatening civilians.
He expressed appreciation for the Egyptian efforts made to resume negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis to establish peace in the region.
The Korean minister, however, declined to comment on the Israeli aggression on the Orient House in Jerusalem, and would only underline his country's denunciation of all forms of violence.
During a dialogue with universities youth at Leaders Institute in Helwan, the foreign minister dealt with the path of national security, stressing on the significance of the peaceful Egyptian initiative in Sudan, as it realizes equal rights for all the Sudanese people.
"Israel's occupation of Palestine is experiencing its last hours, Maher said, voicing conviction that the Israeli occupation was breathing its last breath as it has turned more violent.
"No matter how many Palestinians are killed, there will always be a Palestinian left to resist with stones and bare arms," Maher said.
The Israeli government has gone beyond all red lines, he said, accusing Israel of taking the wrong road towards peace and stability.
Maher added that Egypt stands beside Syria and Lebanon till the full liberation of South Lebanon and Golan Heights is achieved. He denied the existence of any differences between Egypt and Syria.
On the issue of Iraq and Kuwait, the Egyptian Top Diplomat described the issue as tough, adding that the Iraqi invasion to Kuwait in 1990 was a mistake that had a negative impact on the Arab order, and the duration of the sanctions on the Iraqi people is nonsensical.
He added that Iraq's return to the Arab ranks is linked to its recognition of the integrity of its neighbouring countries.
On ties with Iran, Maher said Iran is an important and strong Islamic country, reporting contacts between Egypt and Iran.
Meanwhile , Maher received late Tuesday a phone call from his Iranian counterpart Kamal Kharazi.
Maher and Kharazi reviewed the latest developments in the Middle East, especially in light of the recent Israeli escalation in Al Quds.
At dawn, Friday, the Israeli forces occupied the Orient House, East Jerusalem, and shut down Palestinian Authority institutions in Abu Dis village.
On other hand, Maher will meet on Thursday U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State David Satterfield who will visit Egypt as part of a regional tour. Maher will also meet on Thursday EU Mideast peace envoy Miguel Moratinos and discuss activating the European role at this critical stage.
The two meetings come as part of Egypt's talks with various sides on means to salvage the region, end the provocative steps taken by the Israeli government, bring the Palestinian and Israeli sides back to negotiations and put into effect the Mitchell Report.
