Austrian Defence Minister: Occupation of Orient House a barbaric act
Palestine-Austria, Politics, 8/14/2001
Austrian Defence Minister Herbert Schreiber denounced Israel's occupation of the Palestinian Orient House.
Interviewed by the Egyptian TV Channel I on Monday, Schreiber branded the occupation as a barbaric act which targets the Palestinian people' dignity.
He also deemed it an "inhumane" that dissuade any party from resuming peace talks.
The visiting Austrian minister called on Israel to immediately end its occupation of the Orient House to help revive peaceful negotiations.
Security, not military solutions, will be the key to peace in the region, Schreiber made clear.
The dispatch of international monitors to the region would prevent a possible "international catastrophe", he stressed.
Austria is ready to join the group of international monitors who would be sent to the region, said the visiting minister.
Schreiber arrived in Cairo early Monday at an invitation from Minister of Defence and Military Production Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi.
The Austrian minister started his visit with laying a wreath at the memorial of unknown soldier, and the tomb of late President Anwar Al-Sadat.
Observers in Vienna viewed Schreiber's visit to Egypt at the current stage as an appreciation of Egypt's leading role in the Middle East peace process.
