ADC board names new chairman and president
Regional-USA, Politics, 8/14/2001

The Board of Directors of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) unanimously elected Ziad Asali as its new President and Ahmad Sbaiti as new Chairman of the Board of ADC.

According to an ADC press release, the new Chairman of ADC's Board of Directors, Ahmad Sbaiti, is a long-serving member of ADC's national Board and a well-known Arab-American activist from Dallas, Texas. He is a prominent businessman and community leader in Dallas.

Mr. Sbaiti succeeds Ms. Naila Asali, who has served for many years as the Chair of ADC's Board.

Mr. Sbaiti said "Arab Americans have an important role to play in the United States. When we develop a political presence commensurate with the size and accomplishments of our community, this will be a boon not just to Arab Americans, but to the entire country. ADC is committed to leading the way in this effort by organizing the community, enhancing its ties with other groups in the United States, and developing its voice and influence in the American society."

ADC's new President, Ziad Asali, MD, has been serving as Interim Chief Operating Officer of ADC since November 14, 2000. He has a long history of leadership and activism on behalf of the Arab-American community and recently retired from a distinguished career in medicine. Dr. Asali is Chair of the American Committee on Jerusalem (ACJ), and past President of the Arab-American University Graduates (AAUG) organization. Dr. Asali succeeds Hala Maksoud, who has been President of ADC for the past five years.

Asali said "ADC has made considerable progress in recent years but we know we have a long way to go given the prevailing image of Arabs and Arab Americans in the United States and our nation's policies regarding the Middle East. The challenges are exceptional but the opportunities are great. We are determined to meet these challenges with all the necessary seriousness of purpose. ADC will continue to lead the Arab-American community on the road to political empowerment."
