Israel's take-over of Orient House strengthens resistance
Regional-Libya, Politics, 8/13/2001

Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa held talks Sunday with Libyan Secretary of the People's Committee for African Unity Ali El-Turayki.

Talks covered the latest developments in the Palestinian territories and efforts exerted to establish peace in Sudan in addition to events in the Comoro Islands and the emergency Arab information ministers conference the be held in Cairo on Wednesday.

The session of talks included contacts with a number of Arab foreign ministers.

Following the session, Moussa and Turayki gave a joint press conference in which they asserted the Arab concern over the ongoing developments in the Palestinian territories and the explosive situation in Jerusalem following the Israeli occupation of Orient House.

Moussa said such acts contradict the international law and the U.N. Security Council resolutions on Jerusalem.

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat will take part in the emergency meeting of the Arab information ministers which will tackle the deteriorating situation in the occupied territories from all aspects, as part of a wide-range Arab confrontation of the deteriorating situation in the region.

The occupation of Orient House will lead to intensifying the resistance. The reaction is always equal to the action, Moussa pointed out.

Jeopardizing Jerusalem's status and future is unacceptable by all the Arabs, he said, asserting that such issue was a priority to the Arab and Islamic nations and every country concerned with the stability of the Middle East

He referred to a number of contacts and consultations with Arab foreign ministers on the steps that should be taken by the Arab side in the near future.

As for the possibility of holding an extraordinary Arab summit in light of the latest developments, especially in light of consultations between Arafat and Jordanian King Abdullah of Jordan in this respect. Moussa said Arafat is holding consultations on the future steps to be taken to protect the rights of the Palestinians and Arabs in Jerusalem and the occupied territories.

We have to get ready for the worst scenario, and the lack of light that could show that Israel would refrain from the brinkmanship policy.

Asked about prospects of returning to negotiations, Moussa said it seems there is no chance to speak about peace. I repeat what President Hosni Mubarak said: " There is no use contacting the current Israeli government," he said.

Turayki said speaking about the Arab summit should be preceded by talking about serious arrangements for the Arab summit, because if the Arab summit is held and no resolutions were taken that could cope with the current level of dangerous events, the summit would be considered a failure.

There is a possibility to hold contacts and meetings in the coming stage, he added.

Talks with Moussa focused on the genuine wish to reach a solution to the Sudanese problem, he said, asserting the continuation of efforts within the framework of the Egyptian-Libyan initiative on peace in Sudan.

Turayki denied any differences between Egypt and Sudan on the initiative, asserting that the Sudanese government and all the parties concerned approved of it. Concerning the summit be held in Libya to discuss the Sudanese problem with the participation of Egypt, Libya and Sudan and other African states members of IGAD, Turayki said consultations on the summit are still going on.

Moussa and Turayki underlined the importance of exerting efforts within the framework of the Egyptian-Libyan initiative in order to realize national reconciliation in Sudan.
