PA stresses importance of Egypt's role to stop deterioration of situation
Palestine-Egypt, Politics, 8/9/2001
Hours after US President George W. Bush declaration that he sent a message to President Hosni Mubarak's on the US commitment to the Middle East peace process, the Palestinian Authority underscored the important effort, of President Mubarak's and the Egyptian diplomacy in warning against the deterioration of situation in the region, which resulted from the continuation of the Israeli aggression on Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza.
Palestinian Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Nabil Shaath said that high-level European officials had informed the Palestinian side that the US State Department was witnessing intensive meetings to discuss a mechanism for sending international observers to the Palestinian territories.
The Palestinian official said the recent message President Mubarak's sent to President Bush as well as summoning the US Charge d'Affaires in Cairo and ambassador of Britain and Belgium by Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher reflected Egypt and the Arab countries' concern over the gravity of situation.
In Tel Aviv, Radio Israel said US Secretary of State Colin Powell had a telephone call yesterday with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and called on him to show a gesture of good will towards Palestinians.
The radio said that Powell informed Sharon that the U.S. Middle East peace envoy David Satterfield would arrive in the region next week.
Meanwhile, Shaath said in statements broadcast Tuesday by the Palestinian Satellite Channel that the Palestinian Authority would not stop calling for providing protection for the Palestinian people, adding that the United States was hindering the Palestinian demand.
He described the Israeli government as a "mafia government" pointing out that the European countries have condemned the Israeli policy of assassination and the use of the war machine by Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon against the Palestinians.
