Syrian member of parliament starts political strike
Syria, Politics, 8/9/2001

In a step which is the first of its kind in the history of the Syrian parliament, the Syrian independent member of parliament Maoun al-Homsi started a food hunger strike for one week stemming from his desire, as he said," to get all liberals in Syria and the parliaments of the world to know what we suffer as independent parliamentarians in Syria."

Al-Homsi who is an independent member in the Syrian parliament ( People's Assembly) since 11 years said that the state instead of seeking to solve " burdens of the citizen has started to pursue me and several of my colleagues and to raise doubts on my nationalism."

"The member of the Syrian parliament added in his statements which was circulated with a copy of his interventions in the Syrian parliaments during 10 years that the state has pursued another method for pressuring through " imposing false taxes of its creation estimated at 45 million Syrian pounds almost USD 1 million).

The Syrian ministry of finance informed al-Homsi ( together with another ) independent member of the Syrian parliament Muheie Eddine Habboush, who is the owner of the famous restaurant in Damascus and asked for taxes reaching 23 million Syrian pounds, which means he has to pay a sum of 45 million Syrian pounds accumulated since 1990. This measure was greatly opposed by al-Homsi who used to work in car trade by declaring a counter measure when he said he will, through this measure, debate all his demands after he became to know that the whole matter has become" political, rather than a matter of collecting taxes."
