Sharon confirms his terrorist stances in Turkey
Turkey-Israel, Politics, 8/9/2001
Amid large people's rejection in Turkey and the Turkish media and the public opinion, the Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon on Wednesday started his visit to Ankara and held a round of talks with the Turkish prime minister Polent Acawid.
Following the round of talks, the Turkish prime minister stressed in a press conference the need to lift the economic siege imposed on the Palestinian people and to immediately start the Palestinian- Israeli negotiations.
The Turkish prime minister stressed that Israel's demands to totally halt the violence in the Palestinian territories before resuming the negotiations is an unrealistic demand.
For his part, Sharon said that Israel will not pay the bill for the stability in the ME region, claiming that Israel is working to protect its security.
Sharon continued that the only condition to resume negotiations is to halt " violence" claiming, once again, that his government is committed to peace.
The BBC correspondent in Ankara commented on the visit by saying that non- satisfaction was obvious on the face of the Turkish prime minister and his foreign minister Ismael Cim towards the statements made by Sharon. The BBC correspondent indicated that the diplomatic sources in Ankara did not hide dissatisfaction over Sharon's stances, adding that he was ( Sharon) tough in his talks with the Turks, especially in reminding them that Tel Aviv is ready to help them in all fields, but on the other side, Ankara has to support Israel in all areas it might need.
