Spain opens investigation on collision between Moroccan ferry and Spanish cargo
Morocco-Spain, Local, 8/8/2001

The Spanish merchant navy has ordered an investigation on causes for a collision on Sunday between a Moroccan ferry and a Spanish cargo off the Spanish southern port of Algesiras.

The investigation will be conducted by the standing commission on maritime accidents investigations, said an official at the Spanish port who added it is too early to determine the causes. He also ruled out any mechanical default at the Moroccan ferry boat after the preliminary inspection found the vessel was in perfect state and manned by a competent crew. However, he said he could not speak about the mechanical state of the Spanish cement-loaded cargo which underwent inspection in Sebta (Moroccan northern city under Spanish rule).

The Moroccan ferry boat which is being repaired in the shipyard of Algesiras will resume its shuttles next week.
