In first meeting since 50 years, 'Syrian Socialist party' leaderships meet in Damascus
Syria, Politics, 8/8/2001

The Syrian Social Nationalist party on August 5 held a plenary meeting, the first of its kind since 50 years, for all central leaderships and the work leadership in al-Shaam during which it vowed to back Syria in confrontation of " Zionism."

The chairman of the party's office in Damascus Issam al-Maheyri told reporters that the meeting was held " to study conditions in general, and the chairman of the party Jubran Oreiji gave general instructions to be the basics and the starting point for working in al-Shaam ( proper Syria)." Al-Maheyri added that there is " a strategic alliance between the party and the Syrian Arab republic with which continued relations in an atmosphere of full confidence and intensive cooperation was established.

He continued " so far we do not have a legal licensing but we have a realistic licensing known by the Syrian authorities. It is not a new licensing, rather established since many years. But our activity now has become more valid because the inclination of the rule in Syria is to be open to political freedom," adding " so far we are working but has not got an official licensing.

Al-Maheyri explained that the ruling regime ( in Damascus ) still studies the " laws of parties" and means of organizing them and the licensing comes after the release of the law.

On that the meeting is the first of its kind since 47 years, al-Maheyri said " actually, we held hundreds of meetings, yet we are practicing our activities in a greater freedom." Worthy mentioning in 1955 the Syrian authorities banned the Syrian national Socialist party after it accused it of involving in the assassination of the Syrian amy chief of staff Lt. Gen. Adnan al-Malki.
