Syria-Palestine, Politics, 8/8/2001
Syrian foreign minister Farouk al-Shara on Tuesday in Damascus received the secretary of the PLO executive committee Mahmoud Abbas and members of the accompanying delegation. The meeting was attended by the deputy foreign minister Suleiman Hadad and the director of Palestine department at the foreign ministry Adel al-Shammat.
Talks dealt with development of conditions in the region and the suffering of the Palestinian people in the occupied territories as a result of the oppressive policy conducted by Israel.
To this effect, al-Shara renewed Syria's total backing to the struggle mounted by the Palestinians. He stressed "the need of strengthening the efforts to deepen the national unity of the Palestinians and ensuring the very vast Arab and Palestinian base in order to attain a united Arab position towards the Israeli government's policy of terrorism."
In statements to the press following the meeting, Abbas said that he had discussed with al-Shara the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories and the reasons behind the eruption of the Palestinian Intifada as well as Syrian - Palestinian relations.
Abbas expressed the rejection of the Palestinian authority to the policy of assassination pursued by Israel against the Palestinian people. He described these acts as brutal and need an international move in order to force Israel to give up the policy of liquidating the Palestinian cadres.
