Egypt-European Union, Economics, 8/8/2001

The Ministerial Committee incharge of the Egyptian-EU Association Agreement, headed by Prime Minister Atef Ebeid, yesterday discussed the stages for implementing of the agreement and means to make the most of its provisions until it is approved by the People's Assembly (PA).

Following the meeting, Minister of Information Safwat el-Sherif said that the Association Agreement aimed in the first place to enhance the flow of Egyptian exports into EU markets, as well as drawing up an urgent plan for modernizing Egyptian industry. Priority will be given to 1,500 factories which will benefit from the modernization programme.

The first stage will focus on weaving, textile, engineering and leather industries, Minister el-Sherif said. He added that the period before the approval of the agreement by the PA would be devoted to working hard to improve the trade balance between Egypt and the EU member countries through enhancing the countries' agricultural exports to their markets.

The top information official noted that the Ministerial Committee also discussed a paper on opening negotiations with the EU for establishing 10 training centres to help in the modernisation of Egyptian industry. The EU will provide training and equipment for the centres.
