Egypt chosen to take part in G-8 Int'l Technological committee
Egypt, Economics, 8/7/2001

Egypt was selected as a member in the international technological committee to be formed by the recent summit of the seven industrialized countries plus Russia held in Genoa, Italy, in a bid to set a timetable to narrow the technological gap between the North and the South. Senegal, Tanzania and South Africa, in addition to Egypt, were chosen to represent Africa in the projected committee.

The G-8 summit took such a step following the ever increasing development gap between the North and South due to the rapid technological development, said Head of the Cabinet Information and Decision Support Center (IDSC), Ra' fat Radwan, Egypt's representative in the committee.

Aiming at norrowing the technological gap between the rich and the poor, the digital group was formed by the G-8 together with some countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America, as well as some organisations like the International Association for Communications, the Economic Cooperation Organisation, the World Bank, the UN Development Programme and the EU.

The digital group drew up the "Executive Genoa Plan" including a number of themes to develop the intensive use of information technology in realising socio-economic development and enhancing the participation of the developing countries in the new digital revolution.

Among the adopted themes, the developed countries intend to set up an international expertise center to assist the developing countries in formulating policies on promoting technology .

The plan also encourages the establishment of centers for the Internet providing services and large scale communication networks to supply services in remote areas.

A third theme depends on developing human resources through connecting universities with the Internet on the one hand, and the scientific research centers of the North with their counterparts in the South on the other.

The plan also urges the rich countries to increase their technical and financial assistance to the less-developed states in order to help them cope with the information revolution.

It also proposes the establishment of a center for the developing countries' experts to adopt clear-cut stances towards the decisions taken by these countries on development.
