Jordanian king warns his opposers from violating the constitution
Jordan, Politics, 8/7/2001
In an interview broadcast by the Jordanian TV on Saturday, King Abdullah II warned the opposition in the Jordanian parties, trade unions and the press which lead the campaign of protest against Israel, from endangering the national interests, criticizing certain voices which he described as bargaining nationalism and accused the of working for foreign sides.
Political analysts said that the Jordanian authorities took measures and stances that reflect a recession in freedom. These measures were justified by certain Jordanian sides as falling in the course of the concerns felt by Jordan of the consequences of the deterioration in the security condition in the Palestinian territories on the Kingdom, at a time when the Jordanian authorities stressed that there is no harm to the freedom of the opinion in Jordan if it is in the frame of the law.
In his first TV interview in the Arabic language since he assumed power in Jordan after the death of his father al-Hussein in 1999, the Jordanian King denied such restrictions and simultaneously accused certain parties, journalists and writers of being linked " to foreign sides through financing or guidance, calling on them to abide by the constitution and the laws." The Jordanian Monarch did not define in names these parties, writers, nor the foreign sides they linked to, but he said that these Jordanian sides " are few but of a high voice" and use any occasion or small incident to damage the national unity.
