UN facts finding commission inspects Israeli violations in the occupied Golan
Syria, Politics, 8/6/2001
The Governor of Quneitra Hilal al-Atrash on Saturday received the UN fact finding commission to inspect conditions of the Arabs in the occupied territories and the occupied part of the Syrian Golan. The committee is led by Sri Lanka's ambassador at the UN. Present the meeting was member of the Syrian parliament for the Golan area Midhat Saleh.
In his presentation to members of the committee, al-Atrash stressed that since its occupation of the Golan heights in 1967 and the expulsion of its people, the Israeli forces continue its oppressive and inhuman practices against the Syrians and thereby violating norms of the international law especially the fourth Geneva agreement on protection of Arab citizens in the occupied territories. He indicated the difficulties the Arab citizens suffer in the occupied territories including confiscation of lands, the natural resources and the potable waters and imposing the Israeli teaching curricula in order to abrogate the Arab national identity.
Al-Atrash explained that, under the leadership of President Bashar al-Assad, Syria believes that just and comprehensive peace can be only attainable through the restoration of the occupied lands and the usurped rights to their legitimate owners as well as achieving the land for peace principle.
The governor also gave the chairman of the committee the special documented report prepared by the governorate of Quneitra both in Arabic and English about the situation in Quneitra before and after the Israeli occupation of Quneitra.
The chairman and members of the committee listened to witnesses from the occupied villages on the inhuman and oppressive practices carried out by the Israeli occupation forces against the citizen of the occupied villages of the Golan.
