Metropolitan returns arch
Egypt, History, 8/4/2001
Egypt restored an ancient stone which was stolen more than 50 years ago from an archaeological site in Badrashein and then smuggled to the United States.
Egypt's Consul-General in New York Mahmoud Allam received the artefact from the Metropolitan Museum in the United States.
Gaballah Ali Gaballah, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA), said the stone dates back to the era of King Seti I of the 19th Dynasty.
Coordination is underway with the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which managed to arrest monuments thief Frederick Schultz, who might turn out to have smuggled other antiquities outside Egypt, said Gaballah.
