A campaign in Tunisia for Bin Ali's assuming fourth term of office

Organizations close to the authorities in Tunisia are taking part in the campaign launched by the ruling "Democratic Constitutional Coalition" to promote for the Tunisia President Zein al-Abidin Bin Ali assuming power for the fourth constitutional term in the presidential elections in 2004.

The Tunisian president concludes his third term of office in 2004, which is his last term of office, according article 39th of the Tunisian constitution which determines three terms of office with each of 5 years per each President.

Bin Ali was behind the constitution's inclusion of article 39 when he assumed power in November 1987 with the aim to cancel the life- long presidency which the former Tunisian President al-Habib Bourgeiba offered himself. Bourgeiba was toppled from power by Bin Ali, his first minister a that time, when he was 84 ( because of old age).

The ruling Democratic Constitutional Coalition gave the signal of starting the campaign following an unprecedented campaign held by the non- recognized opposition against Bin Ali's assuming a fourth term of office considering that a "violation to the constitution."
