Cairo denies intention to cut relations with Israel
Egypt-Israel, Politics, 8/4/2001
Cairo on Thursday denied news which stated its determination to cancel the Camp David agreement signed with Israel in 1978 nor to take measures like expelling the Israeli ambassador from Egypt and freezing diplomatic relations with Tel Aviv.
An Egyptian diplomatic source told reporters " this option is not debated " at a time when an official source in Cairo said Egypt has take important decisions towards Israel but without declaring it officially, like not preventing the access of Israeli commodities to Egypt and reducing the number of tourists permitted to enter Egypt.
He noted that decisions take time in order its impact to be felt, noting that it is ruled out to proceed into more escalation ( of such measures) especially that the message has actually reached and the reaction towards it should be studied.
An Arab TV station said on Thursday that the Egyptian foreign minister Ahmad Maher made a telephone call with the Israeli foreign minister Shimon Peres in which he informed him Egypt's determination to cut diplomatic relations with Israel, a matter which means immediate giving up of the peace treaty signed between the two countries, if the government of Ariel Sharon will not agree the principle of international observers. The Egyptian spokesman denied this news and described it as " fabricated."
